Ability
-
Ability refers to an individual’s intellectual aptitude or performance potential. Abilities can, under the right conditions, evolve into outstanding accomplishments or an abundance of insight and knowledge.
High ability thus refers to the possibility—not the existence—of high-performance capability. “Giftedness” constitutes a particularly extreme manifestation of “ability”. “High ability” is the term used for children not yet in school where giftedness is suspected but cannot be reliably identified.
