Autism

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It is characterized by an impairment in social or professional areas of functioning. Symptoms include deficits in social interaction. At the same time, persistent, repetitive patterns of behavior or very unusual, restricted interests are typical of the disorder.

The behavioral problems displayed by an autistic child or adolescent are apparent early on but may well manifest differently during later development. Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder may exhibit high to very high cognitive abilities.

An accurate and professional diagnosis is crucial—especially because certain symptoms that apply to autism may also occur in other contexts in childhood and adolescence.
