Dyslexia (Reading and Spelling Disorder)
-
Dyslexia, a learning disorder, is defined as a clear impairment in acquiring written language, in which reading and spelling skills do not reach the level expected for a person’s age, intelligence, and schooling. Those affected experience persistent difficulties with reading (reading speed/reading comprehension) and/or spelling.
Gifted children may demonstrate exceptional abilities in certain areas while at the same time struggling with spelling and/or reading. This discrepancy can represent both a personal challenge for those affected and a difficulty for targeted support. Additionally, the presence of giftedness can make the identification of dyslexia more difficult, and dyslexia can likewise make giftedness harder to recognize.
