Need for cognition

The “need for cognition” is also called cognitive motivation or the pleasure of thinking. The term refers to a person’s need for cognitive stimulation and challenge. Need for cognition is evident in the pleasure of thinking about objects and relationships as well as in intellectually demanding thinking, reasoning, and problem solving.

Cognitive motivation is a personality trait which can influence the development of achievement just as much as intelligence. The existence of giftedness and cognitive motivation together in an individual can be considered as particularly conducive for their cognitive development.
