Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM)
-
The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) is a comprehensive approach developed by Joseph Renzulli and Sally Reis for the talent- and interest-based support of students’ abilities.
In addition to the development of extensive talent portfolios and the use of curriculum compacting (the streamlining of regular instructional content), a central element of SEM is the Triad Enrichment Model, which consists of three types of activities. Type I activities, such as field trips, lectures, and similar experiences, are designed to stimulate students' curiosity across a range of topics. In Type II activities, students deepen their content knowledge and develop important methodological skills. Type III activities involve inquiry-based learning, in which students independently work on individual questions or problems.
Through its broad enrichment approach—especially in Type I—the SEM offers all students opportunities to develop their individual talents.
